On Saturday 7th February, Chameleon Events coordinated a wedding at De Bortoli Winery www.debortoli.com.au. With the assistance of leading suppliers, a marquee for 170 guests was erected on the beautiful grounds. Suppliers and dedicated De Bortoil staff sweltered while setting up as the temperature reached 46 degrees. We thought the worst case scenario for the day would be that the ceremony be moved inside De Bortoli's restaurant due to the high temperature. But in the end, the ceremony was the only thing that went as planned. the view from the middle of the inferno Guests were handed bottles of chilled water, fans and misting spray as they arrived to keep them as comfortable as possible. This enabled us to hold the wedding ceremony outside as planned. During the ceremony guests watched as flames created an amazing backdrop to a breathtaking location. This was put down to back burning and created a spectacular sight. It wasn’t until drinks were served and smoke was billowing that these were deemed uncontrolled fires. We were in contact with the CFA who thought it best we stay put as roads to Melbourne were closed. We directed all guests to De Bortoli’s restaurant building and had a makeshift cocktail wedding. De Bortoli’s incredible staff turned a three course sit down dinner into a beautiful stand up party, serving each of the courses on small plates so guests could manage standing up. The families of the bride and groom remained calm and positive. They continued to look after their guests – to ensure their safety and their continued enjoyment of the evening. Several guests with related expertise came forward including some CFA officers, an off duty Policeman and an Ambulance Officer (also a bridesmaid!) who put herself on duty for the night. Fortunately the wind changed direction and we were able to move guests to the marquee for an hour until conditions changed again. Guests were able to enjoy dessert, dancing and speeches in the marquee. Months of planning the beautiful styling was able to be appreciated by guests. Our heartfelt thanks go to: Lisa, Pat, Brett, Tim and the team at De Bortoli for looking after us, our suppliers and the guests so beautifully. We have never worked with such professional and caring staff. They should be commended for their work under such challenging circumstances. Brett Currell www.brettcurrell.com.au , stylist extraordinaire, and his staff for their marathon effort of 10 hours work in the heat and their ability to keep the flowers looking beautiful. Andrew of Select AV www.selectav.com.au who was out in the heat, moving around equipment just before the wedding ceremony. Matt from Stand Clear band http://www.standclear.com.au/ who was outside hosing down the building while we kept all guests safely inside. Hamish of the Marquee People www.themarqueepeople.com.au who drove for 3 hours trying to get to De Bortoli to help us secure the safety of our guests in the marquee, but was unable to get past Coldstream. Cath Connelly, the harpist, who came to play for the ceremony, but had to stay for the night because the roads were closed. A huge congratulations to our beautiful Bride and Groom, Liz and Ben van Deventer, who managed to keep positive and enjoy their different but memorable wedding day!!

This week we had the pleasure of coordinating a very special Sikh wedding between Raj and Harjee. The three day event took place in Melbourne and it was an honour for us to be involved. Raj and Harjee's civil ceremony was held at the Nymphaea Lily Lake in the Royal Botanic Gardens and their Sikh marriage ceremony, was held at the Blackburn temple. A reception was held in the Palladium at Crown www.crownmelbourne.com.au where over 600 guest were invited. We feel privileged to have experienced so many special traditions, colors, and emotions during the past week. It was a beautiful union of two people in love, and along with the help of their family and friends, Raj and Harjee's wish came true. We wish them well on their journey.
Why would a bride need a wedding planner? Published in: Melbourne Bride, Issue 51 June 2007 In my experience, there are four reasons why brides need wedding planners: They are time poor. In reality, few couples are able to spend the amount of time required to plan a wedding. It can feel like a full-time job because there are so many little details that need to be taken care of. They live interstate or overseas. Whether couples are planning to get married in the city they grew up in or at a holiday destination, they will find having someone local looking after their interests can be invaluable. They would like a short engagement. If a couple gets engaged in winter and have their hearts set on a spring or summer wedding, they often need help, even if it is for only part of the planning. They want perfection. Brides who want a well-organised event often turn to an expert. A wedding planner will make sure the event is successfully executed and managed on the day. Trent’s busy football career and Tanya’s job as managing director of the couple’s male hair care business prompted the couple to hire a wedding planner.
Published in: Melbourne Bride Magazine, Issue 53 December 2007 Chameleon Events wedding planner Sara Sabey says having your wedding at one venue can not only minimalise stress, it creates a feeling of continuity throughout the day for the bridal party and guests. And it means guests are not left wondering what to do in that ‘gap’ between the ceremony and reception, which can sometimes stretch for hours. “I definitely think there is something extra special about a wedding and reception in one location,” Sara says. “It means the bride and groom have more time to spend with guests, and guests love it if they don’t have to drive between the wedding and reception. “Moving from one location to another can destroy the momentum of the day; having no interruptions means the day flows better.” While you might be running on the adrenaline of the day, your guests will appreciate a break and some light snacks and a couple of glasses of sparkling wine. Sara suggests serving celebratory drinks and nibbles after the ceremony while the bridal party has their photos taken. This not only keeps the guests entertained, it maintains the flow of the day and ensures your guests are looked after.
Published in: The Age Sunday magazine, February 24th 2008 Wedding planners are experts at ensuring that weddings fun like clockwork - rather like a film script. And it takes someone highly organised to ensure that a wedding is hassle-free. Melbourne-based wedding planner Sara Sabey got a taste of event management in London ten years ago when she worked for a branch of the Prince's Trust on an array of royal charity events, which included working with the Prince Wales himself. Back in Melbourne, Sara organised spring carnival marquees, corporate balls, dinner dances and large-scale conferences before turning her hand to wedding planning five years ago. "I organised my own wedding and loved it", says Sara, director of Chameleon Events. "My experience in event management, combined with my passion for people and working with them at such a significant and special time of their lives, attracted me to wedding planning as a profession." Click to view the article as a PDF Published: The Age Sunday magazine, January 24th 2008

Published in Real Weddings Magazine, Style Edition, September 2008 edition Sleek & Chick: Wedding planner and event guru, Sara Sabey of Chameleon Events, shares her thoughts on modern style…"Modern style is current, fashionable and up-to-date. It creates a very personal image reflecting the individuality and interests of the bride and groom. But is also about incorporating their combined cultural, spiritual and religious beliefs and backgrounds. Contemporary couples recognise that a wedding is a theatrical event in which they are the ‘stars’. It will be the most personal ‘public’ event they’re ever likely to be part of. The best modern weddings are an engaging mix of the personal and theatrical. They cleverly combine the ‘warm’ with the ‘wow’! It is the added personal touches and distinctive elements that make this style unique and exciting. A couple choosing a Modern Wedding will choose a modern venue. They will keep the styling sleek and elegant while aiming to reflect their own personalities and the traditions that they hold to be important.” Click to view the article as a PDF Published: Real Weddings, Style Edition, September 2008 p74

Decorated with beautifully fragrant flowers and olive branches, the wrought iron arbour stood at the end of an aisle lined with flower balls of white gerberas and roses suspended from stands with floating ribbons. As part of a surprise birthday present for Victoria, Stavros’ proposal included a new puppy and a beautiful engagement ring! Inspired by the 1920s, Victoria’s stunning gown featured an intricately beaded bodice of pearls and Swarovski crystals and bias cut skirt which included 30 metres of fabric falling into a two metre train. A matching netting headpiece scattered with crystals and beading completed the full length tulle veil. Stavros wore a silver tie complemented by a darker charcoal patterned waist coat. The bridesmaids’ full length dresses in royal purple added a splash of colour. A sophisticated theme of silver and ivory was carried throughout the wedding, from the invitation covered with French beaded Chantilly lace to the stunning tiered wedding cake. Name tag stands featured decorative crystal bases and heart shaped detailing. Click here to download a high resolution pdf of this article.
